Gamification Network

What You Will Learn:

  • Learn how simulations are being embedded into online courses.
  • Build your network by meeting others who share your interest in gamified learning.
  • Learn from leading educators their ideas about theories of gamified learning, gamified activities, and validation of learning through micro-credentials.

Join us for a four-hour virtual Connection event with the D2L Gamification Network. Gamifying the learning experience is an approach to education and training that applies game-based thinking and game mechanics for the purpose of engaging students in different learning experiences.

The gamification of learning is still in its infancy. Much is yet to be learned about successful techniques and strategies. Members of this network will benefit from sharing their experiences and ideas with others who think that gamification will continue to grow in the future.

Whether you’re already involved in providing gamified learning opportunities or just interested in getting started, this event will help connect you with the right people.

Our agenda is designed to provide learning opportunities led by educators who will share their expertise and effective practices garnered from their direct experiences with developing gamified learning opportunities for K-12 students, higher education students, and corporate trainees.

Schedule

Network Welcome and Announcements

12:00pm – 12:05pm ET

Stacked Micro-Credentials: Bright Ideas in Brightspace

12:05pm – 12:45pm ET

Presenter: Dan Semi, D2L

Micro-credentials verify, validate, and declare that specific skills have been achieved. This session will cover creating stackable awards for micro-credentials within Brightspace for use in an existing degree program, continuing education, or professional development to help ensure learner success.

Break

12:45pm – 1:00pm ET

Engaging Students with a Gamified, Investigative Learning Activity

1:00pm – 1:30pm ET

Presenters: Kelly Pope, DePaul University

Immerse yourself in an investigative fraud case learning activity, examining evidence and placing red flags to identify the suspect. We showcase this novel learning game and share how its implementation of multimedia learning principles and learning science theories help enhance students’ curiosity, immersion, and knowledge improvement.

Prize Giveaway Contests

1:30pm – 1:45pm ET

Break

1:45pm – 2:00pm ET

Autonomous and Motived Learning Online

2:00pm – 2:40pm ET

Presenter: Jean-Marie Venturini, Otis College of Art and Design

In this interactive presentation, I will discuss the blending of elements from various learning theories (autonomous and skill-based learning, low-stake assignment strategies, gamification, and motivation theory) used in cooperation with specific tools in Brightspace to create a dynamic and engaged online classroom for students.

Break

2:40pm – 3:00pm ET

Pandemic! The Course: An Online Simulation in Pandemic Prevention and Management

3:00pm – 3:20pm ET

Presenter: Robert Huish, Dalhousie University

In the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when professors were scrambling to move entire courses online, Dr. Bob Huish from Dalhousie University designed a simulation course on pandemic prevention and management. Based on Pandemic the board game, Dr. Huish used a wide range of tools in the D2L environment to create an engaging and timely simulation.

Integrating Simulation as a Learning Tool in Brightspace

3:20pm – 3:40pm ET

Presenter: Robert Smith, American Public University System

In an online program, the cost of creating highly interactive simulations can be cost-prohibitive, however, simulations that are designed to challenge students and provide a quality learning environment are possible using a systems approach from planning to evaluation. Simulations creation is not difficult; however, it requires a team of experts.
